Formatting Your Book for Editing

Below I will detail my process for formatting your book. If you follow these steps, your edit will be much more expedient and the work will go smoothly.

Your manuscript will need to be formatted to the publishing industry standards before I can give you a quote or complete a sample edit.

Industry Standard Format

  • Approx. 250 words per page
  • 12-point serif font (such as Times New Roman)
  • Double-spaced
  • 1” margins

I work in Microsoft Word and Track Changes for editing. (Please familiarize yourself with this format. It’s what the majority of professional editors require.)

After an editorial review of your sample pages (5 to 6 pages), I will provide you with a detailed assessment/evaluation in which I’ll make recommendations for the editing process/levels that best fit your work. This sample edit is free and is an opportunity for you to experience my editing style and for me to best assess your editorial needs/where you are in the writing process.

My Editing Experience

I’ve been editing books for nearly seven years. My experience is in both nonfiction and fiction books and most genres, including adult contemporary novels, memoir, Young Adult fiction, short stories, horror, thrillers, and self-help. My strongest skill set is in developmental editing – assisting you in drawing out your best story. But I am also an experienced copy editor and proofreader.

For additional information about my editing approach and work style, please read the testimonials from authors and colleagues with whom I’ve worked.

Please see rates for information about my fees.

Praise

As a first-time author, I came into our professional relationship with a lot of insecurities about my abilities. Nancy’s background in counseling certainly came in handy! I asked her to be tough on my work – and I was very pleased when it came back full of “red marks.” She delivered her critique with a lot of encouragement and with a wonderfully dry sense of humor. Oh, I have absolutely loved working with Nancy.

— Lisa Weldon, author of “Twenty Pieces, a memoir: a 30-day walk through my past and into my future”
